Summer has always been a challenging season to collect blood. Many states run into blood shortages during the summer months, so this summer Camp Yawgoog plans to help patients in need by hosting a blood drive each week.
All drives will run from 8.30 A.M to 4:30 P.M. and will be held on the Bloodmobile, in the ranger lot near the Bucklin.
Every day in Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Blood Center needs to collect up to 280 pints of blood to meet the blood product needs of the hospitals they service. The RIBC is a primary or secondary supplier to many Southern New England hospitals. When crises like 9/11, Hurricane Sandy and the Boston Marathon occur it is because of regular blood donations that we are able to meet patients needs. In the immediate aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing, the Rhode Island Blood Center provided 340 units of blood products to Boston area hospitals.
To donate at camp you need to be at least 17 years or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. You can most often donate if you are on medication. Most medications do not prevent individuals from donating.
Please, if you can spare an hour, sign up for a chance to make a difference in someone else’s life. We are asking that people sign up for certain times during the days that the drives will be taking place. Web will have a signup sheet available at the Bucklin Building.
Please hydrate and eat before donating. PLEASE BRING AN ID OR YOUR DONOR CARD WITH YOU TO REGISTER TO DONATE.
One donation has the power to save up to three lives. One whole blood donation is divided into three parts: red blood cells, platelets and plasma. These products go to three different individuals in need of blood. Therefore, YOUR one donation can save 3 lives!
As a “thank you” all presenting donors will get a special 2015 Camp Yawgoog blood donor patch!
