Virtual Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge

What: Scouts learn how to be active members of their local community while working on the Citizenship in the Community merit badge. They learn about local government and do service work in their region. They also research the history, culture, and demographics in their area.

Meet your CounselorMy name is Doug Ackerman and I became involved in scouting when my son joined as a Cub Scout.  I was a merit badge counselor and a committee member of Uxbridge Troop 1122.  I was also Scoutmaster of Troop 1122 for three years.  My son earned his Eagle badge in 2017 and I have many wonderful memories of campouts, meetings, skits, campfires, trips, summer camp, etc.  Scouting is a great way for youth to develop in a supportive yet challenging environment.

WHO: Open to all Scouts BSA members.

HOW:  This Merit Badge will be taught in a virtual classroom. The class has a capacity of 12 Scouts. Small classroom size provides all students with the opportunity to share and interact with the counselors and other Scouts. Scouts should be prepared to be challenged and to join the conversation! Participants who do not engage with the class may not receive credit for the badge. Scouts must be prompt for all badge sessions. Late participants may not receive credit for all requirements. Scouts must use a device with video to access this class.

Before beginning work on any merit badge, scouts are to have a discussion with their unit leader regarding the specific badge and counselor.

WHEN: This class will be held virtually over three sessions:

June 2, 2020 7:00PM-9:00PM EST.

June 4, 2020 7:00PM-9:00PM EST.

June 6, 2020 7:00PM-9:00PM EST.

Scouts must attend all three sessions to complete the offered requirements.

After registering, Scouts will receive a link and login information via email the day of scheduled class. Scouts will also receive instructor details that can be used to connect to the counselor on Scoutbook. This assures that completed requirements are easily recorded.

PREREQUISITES: 2a,b, 3a,b, 4a, 5

Suggested supplies/prep-work for students:  The map for requirement 2a and the organization for requirement 2b can be presented in class. Due to social distancing on requirement #3, one can google a local city/town meeting.  A list of suggested movies for requirement 5 is included.

Other Details:  Here is how I am prepared to facilitate this merit badge course:

First meeting - Introductions, Requirements 1, 2 (Prereq), 4a (Prereq), 5 (Just tell me what movie you want to watch), and 6

Second meeting - Requirements 3 (Prereq), 5, 7a and 7b

Third meeting - Requirements 4b, 4c, 7c and 8

We may need further meetings depending on how the scouts proceed, but I believe we will be able to cover the merit badge.

I am looking forward to it!
