Virtual Architecture Merit Badge

 

What: Scouts working on the Architecture merit badge learn about how the design of buildings impacts their use and the environment. They also explore careers related to architecture.

 Meet your CounselorAs President at J. McPhee Architects, Joseph has established independent firm-capitalized on skills/industry relationships working relationships w/ (10) construction firms executing various design/build projects. Managed Office & Junior staff through challenging economic environment 2004-2014.

WHO: Open to all Scouts BSA members.

HOW:  This Merit Badge will be taught in a virtual classroom. The class has a capacity of 20 Scouts. Small classroom size provides all students with the opportunity to share and interact with the counselors and other Scouts. Scouts should be prepared to be challenged and to join the conversation! Participants who do not engage with the class may not receive credit for the badge. Scouts must be prompt for all badge sessions. Late participants may not receive credit for all requirements. Scouts must use a device with video to access this class.

Before beginning work on any merit badge, scouts are to have a discussion with their unit leader regarding the specific badge and counselor.

WHEN: This class will be held virtually over three sessions:

August 17, 2020 7:00PM-8:30PM EST.

August 20, 2020 7:00PM-8:30PM EST.

August 24, 2020 7:00PM-:8:00PM EST.

Scouts must attend all three sessions to complete the offered requirements.

After registering, Scouts will receive a link and login information via email the day of scheduled class. Scouts will also receive instructor details that can be used to connect to the counselor on Scoutbook. This assures that completed requirements are easily recorded. 

PREREQUISITES:  

 

  • Have access to ARCH MB Pamphlet & worksheet & have with them to complete the MB requirements.

  • Participate in discussion activity/demonstration as required by the AMB worksheet via zoom camera.
  • Complete Requirements 1A:  Scout should print PDF or scan hand filled out worksheet/ upload photo or other attachments & email documents to show those requirements to Joseph (2) days before scheduled Zoom meeting date to allow Joseph time to review submitted requirements for each Scout in order to determine they have been adequately completed requirement to: jmcpheearchitect@cox.net. Please include a parent or scout leader on all emails to the merit badge counselor.
  • Complete Requirements 1B: Search ‘Famous Architecture’ using resources such as the Internet (with your parent’s permission), books, and magazines. Do some research to find out how this achievement has influenced the world in its time or today. Be prepared to share an image, (scan a photo from book or copy paste image to word document), be prepared to share image of building & what you learned.

Prior to 2ND Session:

  • Complete Requirement 3C & 4

Prior to 3RD Session:

  • Complete Requirement 5: (Scout may include building civil/structural mechanical/electrical engineering & ‘the trades’). Pick one and find out the education, training, and experience required for this profession. Take notes discussing this with your counselor and explain why this profession might interest you.

Suggested supplies/prep-work for students:

  • Have blank 8.5x11 paper, sharp pencils, ruler/straight edge & tape measure ready-to-use w/ worksheet.
  • Print out ‘Architecture Merit badge Notes’ PDF Attachment for use notetaking during Zoom meetings.
  • Discussion regarding: BSA Nova Awards Program (STEM Award) - Product Design Modeling.
