Virtual Camping Merit Badge

What:  To be prepared to enjoy the outdoors overnight, to do it safely and be ready to handle outdoor situations and emergencies.

Meet your Counselor - Dr. Rizy has spent 44 years as an adult Scouter, serving as committee member, scoutmaster, unit commissioner, district commissioner for urban scouting. He has been associated with Troops 1, 7, 27, 77 and 82 on Aquidneck Island. He holds the Order of the Beaver, and has received the Commissioner’s Award and the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award. He was instrumental in organizing Scouting events at Melville Park and Fort Adams. He led Scout participation in the 225th Battle of Rhode Island (2001) and hiking the RI portion of the Washington Rochambeau Revolutionary Route (2006).

WHO: Open to all Scouts BSA members.

HOW:  The Camping Merit Badge will be taught in a virtual classroom. The class has a capacity of 12 Scouts. Small classroom size provides all students with the opportunity to share and interact with the counselors and other Scouts. Scouts should be prepared to be challenged and to join the conversation! Participants who do not engage with the class may not receive credit for the badge. Scouts must be prompt for all badge sessions. Late participants may not receive credit for all requirements. Scouts must use a device with video to access this class.

Before beginning work on any merit badge, scouts are to have a discussion with their unit leader regarding the specific badge and counselor.

WHEN: This class will be held virtually over two sessions:

October 6, 2020 5:00PM-7:00PM EST.

October 8, 2020 5:00PM-7:00PM EST.

Scouts must attend both sessions to complete the offered requirements.

After registering, login instructions will be sent the day of scheduled class to the email of whom created the registration. Council staff will connect on behalf of the counselor and provide credit for completed requirements. A valid BSA ID number is required. This assures that completed requirements are easily recorded.

PREREQUISITES: First Aid knowledge, some camping experience. Requirements 8 and 9 will not be covered during this course.

Suggested supplies/prep-work for students:
