CACHALOT DISTRICT Serving Acushnet, New Bedford, Fairhaven, Freetown, Dartmouth, Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester, and Wareham District Quicklinks
Scout/Scouter of the Year Award
Can you believe it is almost time for charter turn-in? March 9th at the roundtable (you do know where and when it is right?) we will be taking in charters so be sure to get going on it. All units should be represented. If the ships and crews miss this opportunity, then you will be able to hand them in at the Venturing Roundtable which will be on the last Tuesday of March, which will also cover the history of Senior Scouting in the BSA and all are welcome. Contact George Ripley (fourlions@comcast.net) or call Ed Tavares for more information on time and location. Hopefully you have seen some of the great press we have been getting about our centennial celebration. There is one listed in a link below. The district (you are the district) needs your help in identifying people who can work in the district as commissioners, presenters and committee members. Keep me informed via my Facebook page about what you are doing to celebrate 100 years of Scouting. I realize there is a ton of stuff here but please read it all. And now....

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!!! By George Ramos I NEED YOUR HELP! There has been a change… I am looking for 2 volunteers from each unit that is planning on attending the Spring Camporee this May to help run the stations. There will be about 10 stations and so far, I do not have any staff; just the committee. Please contact me directly at Gramos.csr@gmail.com ASAP. I will have the Program Packet turned in to the office soon and they will put it up on the web sometime thereafter. The theme is The Amazing Race. The dates are May 7, 8, and 9.
SCOUTING FOR 100, ALEX: The Boy Scouts of America is proud to announce that we will be a featured category on the February 25 episode of Jeopardy! This is a tremendous opportunity to extend our brand footprint to a nationally televised audience during our 100-year celebration. Be sure to stay tuned for the entire show, including the commercial breaks, because the BSA will be spotlighted during the first or second commercial break. Attached is a reminder flyer to hand out.
EAGLE STORIES STILL NEEDED: Using the web-site www.thescout100.com we will feature 100 recent Eagle Scouts. We are still looking for Eagle Scout to share their stories. If you know an Eagle Scout please send them to www.doubleknot.com/form/formjump.asp?bidx=0&surveyID=15653&OrgKey=1213 where they will be asked, as part of that submission, to briefly explain why Scouting has been important to them and why it’s still important to our community and nation after 100 years. The 100 Eagles who are selected will be featured with their stories on the website in vignettes and with a picture. Approximately 30 will be videoed for short 2-3 minute segments. The remainder of the vignettes will be in writing. Beginning in late January, approximately three vignettes per week will be posted on the website. The Council will release these stories and seek media coverage for some of the Scouts, as appropriate. Some of the Eagles will be selected to participate in a parade at the mall in Washington, D.C. to represent our Council. The 100 selected Eagles will also be honored at the Council Eagle Scout Recognition Dinner in June.
NOTES FROM THE D.C. COUNCIL: On February the 7th our local Troops and Packs got together and went around to some of the older folks in our area and shoveled their walkways and driveways and even uncovered some cars. They also stopped at some random houses and helped some folks that were trying their best to shovel their driveways on their own. When asked why they were doing this they explained to the people that they were with the Boy Scouts and that they were doing this to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Scouting.
FUN MONEY: The Bowl-a-thon has been a popular fund-raising activity for many years. It is successful because it raises valuable funds for your unit while providing a fun Scout activity. So lace up those bowling shoes and get your unit involved in this exciting activity! • It is a fun activity for your Pack, Den, Troop, Ship, Crew or Post to do together • It provides needed funds for your unit. • It provides funds for the Narragansett Council to use for things such as camperships, and building maintenance for our camps and service centers • It can be done on your schedule…..you pick when and where. • Every Scout that participates gets a patch. • Once again…..It is a fun activity for your unit to do together! For more information go to www.narragansettbsa.org/bowlathon (or just contact me since I am the council coordinator for this)
CAMPERSHIPS: One of the main reasons we do FOS is for families that do not have the money to send their kids to camp. Below is the link to apply for camperships. http://www.doubleknot.com/form/formjump.asp?bidx=0&surveyID=15749&OrgKey=1213
VENTURING SUMMER CAMP OPPORTUNITY: Attached is a brochure for Camp Cachalot’s new Young Adult Programs (Venturers and Explorers). Finally, there is an opportunity for your Crew members to have a summer camp experience. For more information or to register, go to http://www.campcachalot.org/pages/vtweeks.htm
FORMER CACHALOT STAFFER GOES HOLLYWOOD: The film Shutter Island (rated R) is hitting theaters on Friday, February 19, 2010. Watch for former Cachalot handicrafts director Marc Gallant as a German guard. He shot a scene with his buddy Leo (DiCaprio) who shot him. Hopefully that scene remains in the movie.
