District News
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I’ll like to take the time to look back at this Fall and be thankful. We are part of an organization that has taken the lead in bringing up better citizens for almost 100 years. Yet we are not a thing of the past. As I have already mentioned, this year looks to be on track for a recruiting record, with about 205 new youth joining the Scouting program. This only includes applications that have been turned in. (It’s okay to give yourselves a round of applause) With Ship 37, the Dunbar School and other groups coming on line soon, we will have our first growth in unit count in several years as well. If, with those new units and the remaining applications that people have reported (and those few last minute finds), every volunteer in the district will be able to wear a new patch on their uniform: “QUALITY DISTRICT 2008”
And now……

HELP NEEDED:
We are still looking for a few more presenters to help with the FOS presentations. We will be doing a meeting of presenters December 9h immediately following the Roundtable. I have been assured the Roundtable will finish on time or earlier. A big THANK YOU to our district chair for FOS, Michelle Avelar, for the stellar job she has done in such a short time

I recently asked a roster be sent from every unit. The following units have responded.
Packs 3, 27, 32, 39, 51 and 93

HOLIDAY FOR HEROES:
I saw this on the news and thought this would be great for the council to do. I think we should pass the word out about this and hopefully people and scouts do it.
A scout can write a letter to a soldier for the Holidays it was on ABC 6 news and you can go to the website for more information.
Letters have to be postmarked by December 10 to

CACHALOT NOT REPRESENTED:
This is an excerpt from a letter sent to unit leaders back in February. I’m afraid when they write the history of the Council, the Cachalot district will not be represented as no one has responded to this letter.
February 2008
To: Narragansett Council Units
From: Frank Ferraro, Council Commissioner
Jules Cohen, Past Council President
……While we have a written history of the council, to tell the whole story of Scouting we must tell the stories of the individual Troops (and from the 1930’s Packs) that make up the council. Indeed, prior to the formation of the first Boy Scout Councils that have served our area there were many individual Troops in existence. In Rhode Island most of these came under the auspices of the Rhode Island Boy Scouts which was incorporated in 1910 – the Narragansett Council came into being in 1917. There were also several Troops operating in the Southcoast of Massachusetts prior to the formation of the councils in Fall River and New Bedford. Thus, in celebration of Scouting’s 100th anniversary, we will publish a history of the Troops that made up the Narragansett Council (and its predecessors) over the years. The “Over the Hill Gang”, a group of Senior Scouters are anything but over the hill, has agreed to adopt this project and work with units who wish to participate…….
If you wish to help represent our district, let me know…..
