This course is for everyone age 14 & older who will teach Leave No Trace to others. Leave No Trace is integrated into every Scouting Program, every Pack, Troop, Team, Crew, and Ship should have a Leave No Trace Trainer. The course is highly recommended for members of the Districts' outdoor skills training teams who teach IOLS, BALOO, OWLS, and Leader Specific Training. Scouts holding the Outdoor Ethics Guide position of responsibility learn the skills they need to be successful in their job through participating in this course.

Participants learn Leave No Trace principles, skills, and ethics through a combination of presentation, discussion, and hands-on activities.  They learn and practice techniques for teaching these concepts.

Those completing the course will be BSA Leave No Trace Trainers, recognized by the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. Completing the course prepares you to:

  • Understand, demonstrate, and teach minimum impact techniques to friends, family, scouting groups, and other community groups.
  • Teach the BSA Leave No Trace 101 Awareness class, BSA Outdoor Ethics Orientation Course, Leave No Trace sessions in Scout Training, Leave No Trace Awareness workshops, and lead Leave No Trace activities at Scouting events.
  • Better understand outdoor ethics concepts presented in Outdoor leader training and Leader Specific Training
  • Lead discussions on outdoor ethics and help others explore their own personal outdoor ethic.
  • Better understand and teach 44 of the 2016 Trail to 1st Class requirements (34%)

What is the purpose of this class?

The Cub Scout, Scouts BSA, Venturing, and Sea Scout programs all include outdoor stewardship, care for the environment, and Leave No Trace as part of their programs. This course is offered to train adults and youth aged 14 to serve their units and districts as Leave No Trace Trainers and as Outdoor Ethics Guides. Every Cub Scout, Scouts BSA, Venturing, and Sea Scout unit should have at least one Leave No Trace/Outdoor Ethics Trainer. We recommend that Scouts BSA complete this course before serving in the troop Outdoor Ethics Guide position.  The course is highly recommended for members of the Districts' outdoor skills training teams who teach IOLS, BALOO, OWLS, and Leader Specific Training.

Who should attend?

Venturers, Sea Scouts, and Scouts BSA aged 14 and older; adult Cub Scout, Scouts BSA, Venturing, and Sea Scout leaders; and District and Council leaders and trainers.

What will I learn?

This course is designed to enhance your understanding of Leave No Trace practices and outdoor ethics and increase your level of confidence teaching Leave No Trace skills and ethics.  You will be introduced to concepts and methods that will advance your knowledge of recreational impacts and Leave No Trace ethics in developed areas and high adventure back country environments.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be registered as Leave No Trace Trainers with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and with the BSA. Students will receive Leave No Trace teaching materials, a certificate of course completion, a Leave No Trace Trainer patch, and a BSA Leave No Trace Trainer card.
