Virtual Family Life Merit Badge

What:   Family Life is a required merit badge for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.  We will explore family relationship dynamics in many ways, and active participation in our discussions is essential.  This merit badge will help the participants to understand their place in the family, the importance of the family in their present and future life, and the support that the family can provide in their life decisions.

Meet your Counselor - Barbara Jean is a retired educator for Fall River Public Schools. She is currently the pastor of Somerset Baptist Church. Barbara is a longtime Scouter, a former Camp Chaplain, and proud mother of two Eagle Scout sons from Troop 303 Swansea.

WHO: Open to all Scouts BSA members.

HOW:  The Family Life Merit Badge will be taught in a virtual classroom. The class has a capacity of 18 Scouts. Small classroom size provides all students with the opportunity to share and interact with the counselors and other Scouts. Scouts should be prepared to be challenged and to join the conversation! Participants who do not engage with the class may not receive credit for the badge. Scouts must be prompt for all badge sessions. Late participants may not receive credit for all requirements.

Before beginning work on any merit badge, scouts are to have a discussion with their unit leader regarding the specific badge and counselor.

WHEN: This class will be held virtually over two sessions:

August 18, 2020 3:00PM-5:00PM

August 25, 2020 3:00PM-5:00PM

Scouts must attend both sessions to complete the offered requirements.

After registering, Scouts will receive a link and login information via email the day of the scheduled class. Scouts will also receive instructor details that can be used to connect to the counselor on Scoutbook. This assures that completed requirements are easily recorded.

Prerequisites: Participants should be prepared to submit a 90-day chore chart (5-6 chores) or set up a plan to do it following the sessions, with parental acknowledgement of completion.  Other homework requirements can be finished and submitted online as they are completed.

Suggested supplies/prep-work for students: Scouts must be prepared to take part in discussions, and there will be several requirements that will take time and planning to do at home.  Because of this, many may not be able to complete the badge during the two class meetings, but all should be able to complete it via online submissions by the end of September.

Homework: Participants will be asked to do a personal project that benefits their family, a family project that involves everyone in the household, a family meeting that discusses several issues that could have a major effect on the household, and a 90-day chore chart.
