Mammal Study Merit Badge

WHO - This event is open to Scouts BSA members.

WHAT - Seals of Narragansett Bay

Through our life-sized, stuffed harbor seal model, Sealia, students learn the basics of marine mammalogy. By unzipping Sealia and examining her organs, participants learn about a seal’s internal anatomy and special adaptations that allow these furry creatures to thrive in the cold winter waters of Narragansett Bay. This program pairs well with a boat-based harbor seal migration and adaptation program.

WHERE - Bowen's Ferry Landing / Seaman’s Church Institute -18 Market Square Newport, RI 02840

Parking is always available at the Gateway Center on America’s Cup Avenue. Turn around at the end of Market St. Turn left at the light onto America’s Cup Ave. At the fourth light, turn left. The Gateway Center is on your left. Parking is also available for up to 3 hours at the meters on the street.

Group will meet at the dock, board one of our education vessels, participate in a Marine Mammal Cruise first and then stay on board to participate in our Marine Mammal lesson.

WHY - Scouts who attend will work towards earning the Mammal Study merit badge.
