Virtual Architecture Merit Badge

What: Architecture MB introduces scouts to the world of designing the built environment.  Architects are problem-solvers; they have to know how to be creative in the use of form, resources, and history to provide aesthetically pleasing residential, commercial, and public buildings.  The merit badge requirements will give Scouts an opportunity to learn about the knowledge architects need to access to meet the challenges of providing great solutions for the design of buildings.

Meet your CounselorEric Anderson, AIA is an architect and educator with extensive experience in facilities planning and project management for educational and non-profit organizations, developing instructional, research, support and residential buildings.  Over a 30+ year career, he has planned or managed $ 1.5 billion of facilities for non-profit institutions with specific responsibilities for master planning, project design, design management, forensic practice, and capital program management. He is a registered architect in New York and West Virginia, and holds degrees from Carnegie Mellon University and West Virginia University.   He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, where he has been recognized with the Educator and Membership Awards. His research interests include architectural pattern languages, Long Island design and construction precedents, and religious facilities design.  His Scouting achievements include Eagle Scout, Vigil Honor member, NESA Outstanding Eagle award, Hornaday award, and has served in many council-level positions in his home council.

WHO: Open to all Scouts BSA members.

HOW:  This Merit Badge will be taught in a virtual classroom. The class has a capacity of 10 Scouts. Small classroom size provides all students with the opportunity to share and interact with the counselors and other Scouts. Scouts should be prepared to be challenged and to join the conversation! Participants who do not engage with the class may not receive credit for the badge. Scouts must be prompt for all badge sessions. Late participants may not receive credit for all requirements. Scouts must use a device with video to access this class.

Before beginning work on any merit badge, scouts are to have a discussion with their unit leader regarding the specific badge and counselor.

WHEN: This class will be held virtually over four sessions:

June 5, 2020 7:00PM-9:00PM EST.

June 10, 2020 7:00PM-9:00PM EST.

June 12, 2020 7:00PM-:9:00PM EST.

June 17, 2020 7:00PM-9:00PM EST.

Scouts must attend all four sessions to complete the offered requirements.

After registering, Scouts will receive a link and login information via email the day of scheduled class. Scouts will also receive instructor details that can be used to connect to the counselor on Scoutbook. This assures that completed requirements are easily recorded.

PREREQUISITES:  Laptop and access to printer, access to Zoom, internet access with permission of parent confirmed by form; council will provide internet safety briefing to scouts with parents.

Suggested supplies/prep-work for students:  Architecture MB digital book, graph paper, pencil, pen, 12-inch straight edge, camera (phone or standalone device).
