Virtual Cooking Study Merit Badge
What: Cooking is an Eagle-required badge that will teach scouts about food safety, nutrition, food prep, and (most importantly) proper planning. This merit badge is good for any scout who wants to take on the task of cooking for their patrol for the first time, or for experienced chefs who want to learn some new ideas.
There are prerequisites for this badge: Requirements 4,5 and 6, but if you haven’t completed them yet that is okay! This class will give you the skills needed to get them done.
Meet your Counselor - Hi everyone, my name is Tyler Rapillo and I am an Eagle Scout from Troop 68 Trumbull. I’ve been a part of scouting for most of my life and served as Campcraft Director at Camp Yawgoog for a couple years. I have been teaching the cooking merit badge for over five years, so I have enough experience and cooking mishaps under my belt to be able to teach everybody something new.
Outside of this class, I am currently the Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 168 Trumbull and am working on my Masters Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling
WHO: Open to all Scouts BSA members.
HOW: This Merit Badge will be taught in a virtual classroom. The class has a capacity of 16 Scouts. Small classroom size provides all students with the opportunity to share and interact with the counselors and other Scouts. Scouts should be prepared to be challenged and to join the conversation! Participants who do not engage with the class may not receive credit for the badge. Scouts must be prompt for all badge sessions. Late participants may not receive credit for all requirements. Scouts must use a device with video to access this class.
Before beginning work on any merit badge, scouts are to have a discussion with their unit leader regarding the specific badge and counselor.
WHEN: This class will be held virtually over two sessions:
September 26, 2020 10:00AM-12:00PM EST.
October 3, 2020 10:00AM-12:00PM EST.
Scouts must attend both sessions to complete the offered requirements.
After registering, login instructions will be sent the day of scheduled class to the email of whom created the registration. Council staff will connect on behalf of the counselor and provide credit for completed requirements. A valid BSA ID number is required. This assures that completed requirements are easily recorded.
PREREQUISITES: Requirements 4. 5. and 6
Suggested supplies/prep-work for students: Have a food label with the Nutrition Facts with you for the first class.
There will be some homework for the merit badge outside of the prereqs, but that is mainly just prepping for requirement 7 or bringing a food label to the first class to discuss nutrition facts. I will also be making and using a powerpoint for the class.
