Virtual Public Health Merit Badge
What: With the COVID-19 pandemic public health is relevant now more than ever. Join Kaylan Arrington, a public health professional currently working for Cranston Health Equity Zone as we learn what public health is and what it means to Scouts. Scouts learn about how to prevent the spread of disease while working on the Public Health merit badge. They explore how pandemics happen and what steps can be taken to prevent outbreaks. They also learn about careers related to public health.
Meet your Counselor - Kayland Arrington is a public health professional interested in individual health education, policy work, and everything in between. Kayland currently works as the Initiative Director for the Cranston Health Equity Zone (HEZ), a resident-driven initiative aimed at reducing health disparities. She is particularly passionate about working with resilient people living in vulnerable communities. Kayland enjoys a good Netflix binge and can also be found complaining during rewarding rock climbing sessions.

WHO: Open to all Scouts BSA members.
HOW: The Public Health Merit Badge will be taught in a virtual classroom. The class has a capacity of 20 Scouts. Small classroom size provides all students with the opportunity to share and interact with the counselors and other Scouts. Scouts should be prepared to be challenged and to join the conversation! Participants who do not engage with the class may not receive credit for the badge.
WHEN: This class will be held virtually over two sessions:
April 14, 2020 5:00PM-6:30PM
April 15, 2020 5:00PM-6:30PM
Scouts must attend both sessions to complete the offered requirements.
After registering, Scouts will receive a link and login information via email. Scouts will also receive instructor details that can be used to connect to the counselor on Scoutbook. This assures that completed requirements are easily recorded.
PREREQUISITES: Req. 7
