American Heritage Merit Badge

What better place to understand our duty to our country than on the historic naval ships that served the United States in war and peace.  At Battleship Cove, home to five national historic landmarks, earn your American Heritage merit badge by exploring your relationship to the past.  Discover through tours, interviews and activities what it means to be an American, then and now.

Prerequisites:  This workshop will not cover requirement 3, part c: “Research your family’s history.”  Scouts will need to complete this on their own time.

Objectives:  To meet the requirements of the American Heritage badge, Scouts will:

  •  Tour Battleship Cove and discover our national historic landmarks
  •  Interview two US Navy veterans
  •  Explore heritage careers with museum staff members
  •  Listen to and discuss songs from different eras of war
  •  Compare the accomplishments of two individuals during World War II
  •  Describe the significance of the flag, the Pledge of Allegiance, the seal, the motto, the national anthem and the Declaration of Independence

  • Requirement 3:  a, b            
  • Requirement 6: all

Schedule:

9:30 Welcome and Introduction to the National Register of Historic Places
10:00 Tour of Battleship Cove’s national historic landmarks,
-along the way, meet with museum staff to learn about what they do
-learn about JFK (on Kennedy) and Rosie the Riveter (in Women’s Exhibit)
12:00  Lunch (bring your own)
12:30 Songs of War activity
1:00 Interview our Veterans
2:00 Learning Centers: Flag, Pledge, motto, seal, anthem
3:00 Declaration of Independence reading and group reflections
3:30 News article
4:00 Dismissal. Ships remain open until 4:30 for exploring on your own.
