We’re new to Scouting
Welcome! Camp is one of the best parts of the Scouting year, and you don’t need any experience to go.
- Adventure Day Camp is open to kids in grades K–5, no Scouting membership needed. It’s a great way to try Scouting.
- Most other camps require your child to be registered with a pack (grades K–5) or troop (ages 11–17).
- Many camps are done together with your pack or troop, so you won’t be on your own.
- Not sure what a word means? Check Camp words explained below.

Apply for a camp scholarshipCamp words explained
Scouting has its own vocabulary. Here are the terms you’ll see most around camp.
Pack
The local Cub Scout group for kids in kindergarten through 5th grade. Packs are split into smaller groups by grade called dens.
Troop
The local Scouts BSA group for youth ages 11–17. Troops usually go to summer camp together.
Webelos and Arrow of Light
The Cub Scout ranks for 4th and 5th graders. Camps for these Scouts help them get ready to move up to a troop.
Day camp
A camp held during the day. Scouts go home every night, which makes it a great first camp.
Overnight (resident) camp
Scouts sleep at camp, usually in tents or cabins, for a weekend or a full week.
Camp Yawgoog
The Narragansett Council’s summer camp in Rockville, Rhode Island, where Scouts BSA troops spend a week each summer.
Merit badges
Awards Scouts BSA members earn by learning a skill, like swimming, first aid or archery. Summer camp is one of the best places to earn them.
Cubmaster and Scoutmaster
The adult volunteers who lead a pack (Cubmaster) or troop (Scoutmaster). They’re your best first contact for camp questions.
