How membership works
Find a group near you
Scouting happens in local groups — a packfor Cub Scouts (grades K–5) or a troopfor Scouts BSA (ages 11–17).
Register and pay annually
Sign up online through your group. Membership renews each year,and financial help is available if cost is a concern.

Book camping for your unit,sign up for events,and reach out to council staff whenever you need help.

The council runs six camps across the region for members to use.

Scouting words you’ll hear
Scouting has its own vocabulary. Tap a word to see what it means.
Council
The regional organization that runs camps,events and support for every local group in its area. Ours is the Narragansett Council.
District
A smaller area within the council. Each district has a staff member,the district executive,who supports local groups.
Unit,pack or troop
Your local Scouting group. Cub Scouts meet in packs;Scouts BSA meet in troops. “Unit”is the general term for both.
Cub Scouts vs. Scouts BSA
Cub Scouts is for kids in kindergarten through 5th grade. Scouts BSA is for youth ages 11 to 17.
Venturing
An outdoor adventure program for young men and women ages 14 to 20 (or 13 and finished with 8th grade). Venturers meet in groups called crews and plan activities like backpacking,climbing and service projects.
Merit badge
An award a Scout earns by learning a skill or subject,like first aid,cooking or robotics.
Camporee
A weekend camping event where many troops gather for competitions and activities.
Eagle Scout
The highest rank in Scouts BSA,earned by completing badges,leadership roles and a community service project.
Sea Scouts
A program for young men and women ages 14 to 20 (or 13 and finished with 8th grade) focused on boating,sailing and water skills. Sea Scouts meet in groups called ships.
Camp Yawgoog
The council’s largest camp,in Rockville,RI,home to summer camp for Scouts BSA for over a century.
