What is a Klondike Derby?
A winter day of teamwork, sled racing and Scout skills, inspired by the Klondike Gold Rush.
It’s a friendly competition where teams of Scouts pull a sled through a course of outdoor “towns.” At each town, the team takes on a challenge that tests their Scouting skills, teamwork and leadership, all while racing the clock and other teams.
It’s one of the most memorable events of the Scouting year, and a great way for Scouts to show what they’ve learned.
- Sled
- The team’s wooden sled (sometimes called a sledge), loaded with gear and pulled by the Scouts themselves.
- Town
- A stop on the course, named for the Gold Rush theme, where the team completes a skill challenge.
- Team
- A group of 4 to 7 Scouts, usually a patrol from the same unit, who stay together all day.

How the day works
Think of it as a race from town to town. Here’s the route your team will follow.
- 1
Form your team
Gather 4 to 7 Scouts from your unit.
- 2
Load the sled
Pack the gear your team will need on the course.
- 3
Mush to each town
Pull your sled to every stop on the course.
- 4
Take on the challenge
Use your Scout skills and work as a team at each town.
- 5
Beat the clock
Finish strong and see how your team stacked up.
Who can take part?
Klondike is open to older Scouts across several programs. If your Scout is in any of these, they can join a team.
Scouts BSA
Troop members, typically ages 11 to 17.
Venturers
Members of a Venturing crew, ages 14 to 20.
Sea Scouts
Members of a Sea Scout ship, ages 14 to 20.
Arrow of Light
Some events welcome fifth-grade Cub Scouts, so check your event’s registration page first. Klondike comes right before crossover season, making it a great first taste of troop-style adventure.
Explorers
Members of an Exploring post.
New family? Scouts register through their unit. Talk with your Scoutmaster, Crew Advisor or Den Leader about joining your unit’s team.

Choose your Klondike
The council hosts three Klondike Derbies at different camps. Pick the date and location that works best for your unit.
Getting your team ready
Whether it’s your first Klondike or your tenth, a little prep at troop meetings goes a long way.

Common questions
Does my Scout need experience to take part?
No. Teams mix experienced and newer Scouts, and working together is part of the fun. Practicing a few basic skills beforehand will help everyone feel confident.
How do we register?
Units register their teams. Choose an event above and follow the registration link, or ask your unit leader if your troop, crew or ship is already signed up.
How big is a team?
Each team has 4 to 7 Scouts. Most units send their patrols as teams.
What if there’s no snow?
The Klondike Derby still happens, snow or no snow. Teams pull their sleds over whatever the ground looks like that day, whether that’s snow, mud or frozen grass. Winter weather in New England is unpredictable, so plan to dress for cold, wet conditions and keep an eye on the event’s registration page and your unit’s messages for updates.
Can parents come?
Check with your unit leader and the event’s registration page for details on adult volunteers and visitors.
